Pesticide spraying affects students By Lakna Paranamanna

Following several incidents of students falling sick in several estate
schools in the Central province due to pesticide spraying, the
provincial Education Ministry has taken measures to conduct awareness
programmes on pesticide spraying, for the people in the area.

Central Province Education (Tamil) Minister Mrs. Anushya Siwarajah
speaking to Daily Mirror said that a team of officials from the
Agriculture Ministry conducted several awareness programmes on
pesticide spraying for the parents and estate workers in the areas
during the past few days.

Three days ago, some 90 students from a school in Walapane, Nuwara
Eliya were admitted to hospital suffering from nausea and shivering,
while 50 students of the Nawalapitiya Westoll estate school were
hospitalised yesterday suffering with similar symptoms. “Both these
incidents were suspected to be results of pesticide spraying in
adjoining land plots during school hours,” Mrs. Siwarajah said.

“I have already spoken to the Health ministry and requested them to
intervene in the matter.
